St. Paul Hidden Cellar
We salvaged the original cellar stairs to this historic home when we added a new deck by incorporating an operating lift staircase, allowing access to the basement from the exterior of the house.

The homeowners loved the character and functionality of their original cellar door and were determined to keep it as the primary access to their basement. However, they were almost ready to give up on the idea of building a deck, as it seemed impossible to make the two work together without compromising either function or design. That’s where Zeke and his brother Zacc's enginuity and problem-solving skills made all the difference. They engineered a custom hydraulic system that allowed the cellar door to open and close effortlessly, preserving its full use while seamlessly integrating it into the new deck. The system is so smooth and easy to operate that even our own kids can lift it with minimal effort. This project is a great example of how thoughtful design can bring challenging ideas to life without sacrificing practicality or beauty.
